Background Information:

T.C.A. §49-6-3401(c)(4) authorizes school boards to appoint a disciplinary hearing authority for instances in which a student may be suspended or remanded to alternative school for a period of more than ten (10) school days.  T.C.A. §49-6-3401(c)(6) states that local school board policy may require an appeal to the director of schools prior to a request for review to the board. 

The Board’s current policy (see attached) does not provide for an appeal to the director of schools. The amended policy would include the provision requiring an appeal be addressed to the director before a request for review to the board can be made.

Staff Recommendation:

We recommend approval of the amendment to Board Policy#6.317-Student Disciplinary Hearing Authority on first reading.
